What is tufted chenille?

Tufted chenille is a textile defined by touch. Its origins trace back to
18th-century Europe, where the fabric was prized for its softness and depth.
Today, chenille is refined through modern techniques that honour its heritage while elevating its performance.

The name chenille derives from the French word for “caterpillar” - an
apt reference to its plush, velvety surface. Characterised by raised yarn piles that sit delicately above the fabric base, tufted chenille offers a distinctive texture found in few other materials.

At House of Chenille, our fabrics are crafted using premium cotton yarns,
chosen for their natural softness and breathability. Select styles incorporate
a refined cotton-polyester blend to achieve precise weight, structure, and
longevity - always in service of comfort and elegance.

How does tufted chenille differ from velvet?

While visually comparable, chenille and velvet are fundamentally different in construction.

Chenille describes the yarn itself, while velvet refers to a weaving technique. Both fabrics share a sensuous softness and richness, yet their structures, and therefore their behaviours, are distinct.

Tufted chenille is easily recognised by its tactile contrast: a plush, raised surface paired with a smooth, softly woven underside. This duality is
central to Chenille’s character and its enduring appeal.

Product Care

Each House of Chenille piece is crafted with care using premium materials. To preserve softness, texture, and longevity, follow the care instructions provided with your garment.

How should I care for my chenille robe?

Each House of Chenille robe is laundered and pre-shrunk before it reaches you, ensuring exceptional softness from first wear.

To preserve the integrity of the tufted piles and maintain the fabric’s signature feel, we recommend gentle care:

  • Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle
  • Use mild detergents to protect the fibres
  • Tumble dry on a normal setting and remove promptly

Avoid hot water, harsh chemicals, or excessive agitation. Ironing is not
required; if desired, press only on the reverse side of the garment.

With thoughtful care, chenille becomes softer over time - a fabric that evolves with you.

Will my robe shed?

Light shedding is a natural expression of tufted chenille, particularly during initial use. This occurs as excess fibres release from the raised piles, a characteristic inherent to the fabric’s construction.

To minimise this, every House of Chenille garment is washed once often twice, before packing. Over time, shedding reduces significantly, while softness deepens.

Our garments are dyed only after stitching is complete, a considered process that protects the cotton piles, enhances colour depth, and ensures lasting quality.
